In comparison to its two main adversaries – the U.S. Navy and the Royal Navy – the Imperial Japanese Navy developed little in the way of camouflage schemes, and utilized a much smaller range of colors. Camouflage schemes saw some use on units assigned to the Aleutians, on seaplane tenders, armed merchant cruisers and merchant ships, and in the late war years on some cruisers and aircraft carriers. Of primary interest to modelers of the IJN is the fact that the four principal navy yards – Kure, Sasebo, Maizuru, and Yokosuka – utilized gray paints that differed somewhat in shade. Thus the modeler desiring greatest accuracy must conduct enough research to know which yard a given ship was assigned to or refitted and repaired.
This set of paint chips is meant as a complement to Imperial Japanese Navy Set #1. Designed for the ship modeler as well as for the naval historian or maritime artist, this second Japanese set contains actual paint samples collected during World War II by two Japanese naval pilots who scratchbuilt model ships and aircraft. These samples are from the naval shipyards themselves.
While there are no new names, our color chips are examples of the range of color variations as they were used in practice by each shipyard.
This set contains three more Sasebo Gray samples. We have two more Kure Grays, as well as one more Maizuru Gray. The letter suffix is our device for individual identification only, and not for official designation. We do not have dates for each sample. The Linoleum and anti-fouling samples are from different shipyards but are not separately identifiable. Please note that this is the first time we have included anti-fouling in our IJN series.
We are presenting this set to provide modelers and historians with a more thorough database of Japanese naval paints of the World War II period.
